Poultry red mite (Dermanyssus gallinae) or commonly known as chicken mite can be a significant issue in the summer months. Whilst low numbers of mites can cause minor irritation, often if left uncontrolled population growth can result in major annoyance leading to a range of issues including stress, loss of condition of the bird or reduction in egg production. Poultry mite will often cause irritation to humans.
It is essential that before treating the infestation area the coop is cleaned as this will reduce adults; one of the best long-term control solutions for poultry mite is a diatomaceous earth powder; this product can be applied directly onto the bird as well as around the coop.
Adding the product to a suitable tray is also advisable as the hens will self-treat themselves by dust bathing.
Diatomaceous earth powder mustn't be used with predator mites such as Androlaelaps casalis.
